this. the american people are also partly to blame here. there was an election and he left in place everything the same. the house is the same. senate is basically the same. you voted for basically more of the same. american people don't escape blame either. >> gregg: van hollen basically has the same argument, he has been out for 12 days and vanhollen, boehner would not touk talk to him. i'm not sure i buy that. if it does go to the fiscal cliff and we go over it, sequestration would cut only $109 billion next year. that is actually not a lot in a budget of almost four trillion, is it? >> it's not a lot of the total number, half of that goes to defense which are own admirals and generals have said and secretary of defense would be devastating. this comes on top of -- $50 billion in one year to the defense. and it doesn't touch at all medicare and the other entitlement programs. >> gregg: biggest drivers and cost and absolutely nothing has been done about those things? >> it's criminal. she is things are going to destroy us. we can live with higher taxes, you might not think it's th

of elected officials and unelected staffs behind closed doors, trying to do a back-room deal is an outrage. what harry reid should do, he should bring over to the senate, the legislation that the house has passed that extends all the current tax rates and fixes the sequestration. if that's not good enough for the senate, that's fine. allow the 100 senators to offer amendments and debate the amendments, vote on things and send it back to the house. that's the way the process should work, not the secret, back-room deals. >> that's the framework as the leaders are behind closed doors as you said, hammering something out. when they emerged from that and you were presented with hathey did come up with -- inr if they do come up with something -- will you vote for that? will have you questions? will you filibuster? >> how would i know? how am i going to evaluate something -- even if it's minimal, it will be a serious piece of legislation -- what do i get, four hours to do that? 12 hours, 24 hours? this is an absurd process. i am a manufacturer, i am always looking for the root cause of th

before we reach the deadline? >> because republicans lost this election and so the president actually does have a little bit more political capital to spend than the republicans do. john boehner would get a much worse deal than he would have gotten the summer when we were talking when ford and i actually were on this channel talking about the debt limit. and that is because the right has been captured by antitax interest by grover norquist, by people who won't come to the table and have a reasonable conversation about modest tax increases in relationship to modest cuts in spending where the majority of american people are. and so -- >> alexis, let's be honest. >> because the house is acting like bunch of kids. >> the president is backtracking on his deal because all he's concerned about doing is breaking house republicans on this issue, because he wants to get his agenda through before the 2014 election and he feels the best way to do this is make house republicans and john boehner who is now the least popular congressional leader look like bad guys. it's political heater and not good

after the winter break, one newly elected state lawmaker has a controversial idea, to let teachers bring guns into the classroom. state elect, elizabeth law would allow pilots to bring dpns into the cockpit. the plan would be optional and wouldn't cost anything since teachers would be using their own guns. listen. >> the number one concern for me is public safety in our schools. i don't want our children to be sitting ducks, i don't want our teachers to be sitting ducks and i want to hear any and all ideas. my idea is just one. >> reporter: in nearby utah, it's already legal to carry guns in the classroom, a record number of teachers attended a training seminar last week. teachers are first told to initiate a lockdown, if that fails they want to know how to handle the situation if a gun is needed. while there's no official data on whether gun sales are up in the wake of the sandy hook tragedy, the fbi reports in the process, more criminal background checks this year compared to last and they need more money to conduct the criminal background checks that are required there and they'

election. on november 6th president obama beat republican rival mitt romney to win a second term. what other stories topped the list and what do they tell us about the world we live in today. john fund is a columnist for "national review magazine" he joins us to weigh in on this. john, good to see you. merry christmas to you. >> thank you. kelly: we hope you're doing well. we know the top story was the election, it was a bitter fight to the end, president obama winning re-election. what does it tell us, though, about the campaign of mitt romney, and the mood of the country then, because we had so many other big stories affect the outcome of the election. >> well, this election, i think, was a very curious one, because president obama made some history. normal lee an incumbent with an economy that weak and no particular prospects of it getting better wouldn't have won re-election. but president obama was able to take advantage of i think dramatic stumbles on the part of mitt romney, the 47% line and various other things, absolutely. kelly: does it surprise you that mitt romney's p

little surprised that the president fresh off the election is saying that the speaker of the house is supposed to lead the country. he is supposed to lead, his party is the more difficult to get legislation through. so for him to say in the last 24 hours before the tax increases that it's up to john boehner to fix things surprises me and disappoints me a great deal. >> eric: obviously, you are faulting, in your view, a lack of presidential leadership? not only faulting, i think a lot of folks are not focused, i have believed that the president wants to go over the cliff. peter orszag, telling the president 3 and 4 years that the tax rates needed to go up. howard dean was making the rounds for months, saying that tax rates need to go up. nancy pelosi thinks the tax rates should go up on everybody. does the president have the political will to go against his own party? what we are seeing so far, he is not. we read his first offer, when he sat down with mr. boehner, mr. boehner said here's $800 billion for revenue and what do i get for that? the president allegedly said, that's for free.

foreign prime minister is ruling in syria untillet election takes place. secretary of state hillary clinton is expected to be back in the office next week. and she fainted and hit her head after being dehidrated from a stomach virus . what some are calling the benghazi shuffle . they are thought to have been relieved of duty . may be switching desks . some congress and joining us now is republican congressman chairman of the house foreign relation committee . trying to get information. of the four employees and were they fired or reassigned or on administrative leave. what have you heard? >> it is a shameful episode for the state department. they are bungling everything relate to bung bung. - benghazi. the americans asked near more security and consulate was over run by al qaeda operatives. and the administration wanted a web of lies of outrage of a video that slammed the prophet muhammad . that was bogus and now the state department purposely misled the american people and saying that four individuals in the state department high level were going to lose their jobs and the secretar

. merkel has an election coming up soon. i don't think you'll see germany doing a lot of bailing out the rest of europe. and europe is the number one global concern to this day. if europe doesn't do well, the rest of the world economy is going to suffer. >> gregg: what about japan? is it insolvent already? >> yeah. a lot of people believe so. that will be a big story in 2014. just recently japan announced that they are going to start printed ago lot of money and last week, you saw the yen drop in value 15% which means that, if what we are company exporting to japan that just hurts our sales quite a bit because the value of their yen is less. so not able to buy as many products which is then, gregg, to hurt our stock market because a lot of our growth comes outside our borders of the united states. this is is a problem that goes directly to nks 401-k plan. >> then there is china which is the growth juggernaut but it accelerated? >> in fact the beginning of the year they are looking at double-digit growth. we're going to see 6-7% growth. china is going to be okay. they are not suffering st
